> When I saw this on Blu-ray at a local retailer, I just needed a friend's
recommendation to make the purchase. It's been well over ten years since
I last viewed the original Rurouni Kenshin anime, and it
remains one of my favorite samurai action series. My memory of Kenshin's
wandering adventures isn't too detailed, but I had deja vu often while
watching this live action adaptation.
> Let me say, the scenery is quite nice in this film. The music seems sparse
at times, but what's there does a good job of setting the tone. I wasn't
sure if the actor playing Kenshin would be able to pull it off, but I'm
happy to report he does a great job! Also, there wasn't too much whining
or crying by the women -- check. If you're looking for nudity, then look
elsewhere.
> Kenshin Himura is a war torn samurai who disavows bloodshed, and carries
a reverse blade to avoid killing anyone that challenges him. Even so, the
movie is full of samurai fight scenes that merely end in a pummeling. He
befriends the beautiful and naive instructor Kaoru, who runs a dojo in
her family's honor. Times are changing, though, and danger seems to find
Kenshin all the time. Can he save the town and his lovely friend from the
clutches of a greedy drug dealer and a ruthless killer? All without bloodshed??

Bottom
Line: |
> I like the actors, costumes, action, sets, and special effects. Rurouni
Kenshin isn't a big-budget movie, but you'll enjoy it just the
same. Even the English dub that Funimation produced is decent.
That's wonderful, because I don't like reading the text of an entire movie
while following the action. This film isn't perfect, but it tells a compelling
story with great visual flare. Fans of the manga and anime will certainly
appreciate this move adaptation. Otherwise, it's a very stylish samurai
flick of good vs. evil.
